1. PhD Student Position

Two PhD student positions are available in the Garcia Lab at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) at Arizona State University (ASU) beginning in Spring 2018. Research topics include: hydrological variability & change, sustainable water management, coupled (socio-hydrological or socio-ecological-technical) systems analysis, and resilient infrastructure systems.

 

A M.S. degree in hydrology, water resources, or civil engineering and/or work experience in the field are preferred. The position will involve modeling, programming, statistical analysis, and collaboration with social scientists, and prior experience is desirable. The research assistantships come with a stipend, full tuition, and health insurance. Students from groups underrepresented in engineering are particularly encouraged to apply. 2. PhD Position Mapping and classifying landslides by exploiting EO Big Data

The Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD position in the area of slope stability analysis. The successful candidate must have a MSc in Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related field and be strongly interested in research. Knowledge and experience in remote sensing and machine learning algorithms are of prime importance. Good technical and writing skills are desired. The duration of the position is about 3-4 years.

 

The position is funded for 3 years by the EU-H2020 project “BETTER”. The main objective of BETTER is to implement an Earth Observation (EO) Big Data intermediate service layer devoted to harnessing the potential of the Copernicus and Sentinel European EO data directly from the needs of the users. BETTER developments will be driven by a large number of Big Data challenges to be set forward by the users deeply involved in addressing the key societal challenges. ETH Zurich is responsible for the Big Data challenges related to GeoHazards, and the PhD student will be directly involved in these activities, in particular for the analysis of slope instability processes.

3. Lecturer B: Geochemistry

We seek to employ a Lecturer in Geochemistry with an overall research focus related to understanding the evolution of the solid Earth, to complement existing strengths within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Birkbeck and the Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences (IEPS), which is joint with the UCL Department of Earth Sciences. Areas of specialization might include, but are not limited to, isotope geochemistry, igneous/metamorphic processes, and earth/planet/asteroid/comet evolution, with research skills in observation, measurement and modeling.

 

IEPS provides access to newly built laboratories and ultramodern clean-room suites and a wide spectrum of analytical facilities that include state-of-the-art mass spectrometers suitable for studying planetary isotopes and noble gases, a microprobe, SEM, XRD and IR Raman. Other capabilities include MC-ICPMS, LA-ICPMS, U-Pb geochronology and low temperature chronometry (fission-track, U-Th-He) as well as facilities for environmental geochemistry.

 

Candidate Requirement

The successful candidate must have a PhD and must provide evidence of the highest levels of research activity. They will teach courses such as “Introduction to Geochemistry” to BSc level geology and planetary students, along with other modules at BSc and MSc level in subjects that make full use of their research experience. Supervision of BSc, MSc, MPhil and PhD students is also expected. Teaching will involve evening classes in central London plus distance learning duties, and participation in field classes. The successful candidate will be expected to place strong emphasis on the pastoral care and intellectual development of students. Administrative activities will be expected as a contribution to departmental and outside activities concomitant with grade.

We seek to employ a Lecturer in Planetary Surfaces with an overall research focus related to understanding the evolution of the planets, moons and solar system objects, including the Earth, to complement existing strengths within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Birkbeck and the Institute of Earth and Planetary Sciences (IEPS) which is joint with the UCL Department of Earth Sciences. Areas of specialization might include, but are not limited to, surface processes using remote sensing and field/laboratory studies, planetary exploration missions, and earth/planet/asteroid/comet evolution, with research skills in observation, measurement and modeling. IEPS provides access to the Centre for Planetary Sciences, a NASA Regional Planetary Imaging Facility, and a wide range of geochemical and geophysical science laboratories.

5. Assistant Professor

POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  This is an academic year (9-month, 0.75-EFT), tenure-track, 0.50-EFT research, 0.25-EFT teaching appointment offered at the rank of Assistant Professor.  Individuals with experience in the broad areas of forest ecology and/or tree physiology are encouraged to apply.  Applicants working at the organism, population, or ecosystem scale are welcome with preference for those who work to scale processes to whole ecosystems or landscapes. Responsibilities will include developing an active research program supported by extramural funding, teaching or co-teaching courses related to forest ecology/tree physiology at the undergraduate level (e.g., dendrology or ecology of natural resources), and developing graduate level courses in their area of expertise.  It is also expected that the successful candidate will advise and mentor undergraduate professional students, serve on Senior Project/Thesis advisory committees, direct and mentor graduate students, serve on School and University committees, and actively participate in professional and scientific societies. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree and at least 1 year of either post-doctoral  training or equivalent professional experience in forest ecology/tree physiology or in a closely related forest science discipline. Evidence of research productivity and the potential to attract external research funding is essential.  The person must also demonstrate the ability and commitment for effective undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring.

7. Adjunct Professor of Environmental Science

Job Summary

There is an immediate opening to teach Understanding our Environment (ENVS 100) at the University of San Francisco. The schedule is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:40 to 3:55 p.m. Classes start Tuesday August 22, 2017. This course is an introduction to environmental science and environmental studies for non-science majors. It examines the environmental impact of population growth on natural resources; mineral and resource extraction; water resource use and water pollution; air pollution and climate change; and conventional and sustainable energy supplies. Emphasis is placed on a holistic approach to environmental science using class discussions, laboratory exercises, and environmental surveys to reinforce scientific principles.

 

Job Responsibilities

Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:40 to 3:55 p.m. The fall semester runs from August 22 through December 6, 2017, followed by a week of mandatory final exams with grades due no later than January 2, 2018.
