1. PhD student

We are looking for highly motivated students to take up two PhD positions in the projects CHAR and RAWFILL.

In RAWFILL, the PhD (3 years) will use and develop geophysical methods for landfill mining initiatives on sites located in Belgium and France with advanced geophysical methods and guided sampling. It is supervised by Professor F. Nguyen and is in close collaboration with the British Geological Survey.


In CHAR, the PhD (4 years) will use and develop geophysical methods to assess the spatio-temporal patterns of soil hydraulic properties and root water uptake and their relationship to charcoal enrichment (supervised by Prs. F. Nguyen and S. Garré, in Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Campus).


Profile: a MSc degree or equivalent in geophysics, physics, soil or geo science, engineering, or related discipline. A strong background in physics or geophysics, applied mathematics, and numerical methods is an asset

Position Summary:

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division (https://eesa.lbl.gov/our-divisions/energy-geosciences/) has an opening for a Earth Project Scientist. Within this position you will participate in research on subsurface coupled processes, including thermal, hydraulic, and geomechanical processes associated with a range of geoscientific and geoengineering applications, including geothermal energy extraction and geologic carbon sequestration.


What You Will Do:

? Conduct research on subsurface coupled processes, including thermal, hydraulic, and geomechanical processes associated with a range of geoscientific and geoengineering applications, including geothermal energy extraction and geologic carbon sequestration.

? Collect and analyze field data and application of coupled processes numerical modeling to interpret field data.

? Publish and present research results in peer-review journals conference papers and reports.


What is Required:

? Ph.D. or equivalent experience in rock mechanics, geology, hydrogeology or related field.

? Extensive experience in geology, rock mechanics, and hydrogeology, including geological mapping, field data collection and analysis, and numerical modeling.

? Advanced skills in applications of numerical models such a TOUGH-family codes to simulate interactions of fluid flow, temperature and geomechanical stresses.

? Documented ability to publish research results in scientific journals.  

? Ability to lift 10-20 lbs; climbing or balancing on ladders/scaffolding.

? Ability to walk into difficult terrain and underground mines for field data collection and installation of field monitoring equipment.

7. Lecturers in Earth and Environmental Science (3 positions)

The Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) at the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh, seeks to fill three, one-year Lecturer positions in environmental science and geology, effective August 2017. Successful candidates will be committed to excellence in teaching and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.


Responsibilities include: 12 contact hours of undergraduate instruction per semester. Each lecturer will be responsible for one of the following three positions: (1) Mineralogy (with lab; Fall semester) and Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology (with lab; Spring semester); (2) Soil Science; or (3) Water Quality Modeling. Both Soil Science and Water Quality Modeling courses are full-day immersive field courses taught in the fall semester as part of the Applied Environmental Science Program at the William H. Miner Institute. Additional courses may include, dependent on candidate specialty and departmental need, Introduction to Physical Geology, Evolution of Earth (Historical Geology), Geology Seminar, Environmental Technology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Science Seminar, and Water Quality Analysis & Instrumentation.  Candidates may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.


Required Qualifications: M.S. or Ph.D. in environmental science, geology, or related discipline is required at time of appointment.  ABD candidates will be considered. The successful candidates will have demonstrated an ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.


Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with a Ph.D. in environmental science, geology, or related field with expertise in one of mineralogy and/or petrology; environmental chemistry; environmental modeling; or soil science. Preference will be given to candidates with documented evidence of college-level teaching effectiveness.
