1. Postdoctoral Investigator
The department of Physical Oceanography at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Postdoctoral Investigator to join their team. This is a temporary, full-time position and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of an extension.
This postdoctoral position will work closely with Dr.Michael Spall to pursue research into the dynamics of how the global scale meridional overturning circulation crosses the equator. The primary approach will make use of idealized numerical models together with scaling theory, boundary layer dynamics, and stability theory.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
- A Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics or closely related field.
- A strong background in fluid dynamics with applications to the ocean or atmosphere is required.
- Experience in numerical modeling is advantageous.
- Candidates should have strong computer skills including programming expertise in Matlab and Fortran and knowledge of boundary layer and stability theory.

2. Istant Project Scientist
The Radio Astronomy Laboratory (RAL) is a research unit within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. RAL was created in 1958 to foster research in radio astronomy, a discipline that naturally extends beyond the borders of traditional academic departments at Berkeley. Over the years, faculty and graduate students from the Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Geology and Geophysics departments have made use of the RAL's facilities. The main activity of the RAL has been to build and maintain radio astronomy observatories and conduct research on galaxy and star formation, galaxy evolution, the distribution of dark matter, protostars, comets and other features of the universe.
Research Group Overview:
The research group makes observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation, the relic radiation from the Big Bang. A prime goal of the work is to understand Inflation, a model for the beginning of the universe. The group builds instrumentation to make highly sensitive polarization measurements of the microwave sky. The key of these instruments is lithographed focal-plane arrays of bolometers.
Primary responsibilities are listed below:
Under supervision from the RAL Associate Director Adrian Lee, assist with the development of Cosmic Microwave Background Experiments with an emphasis on bolometer arrays and their readout electronics. The successful candidate is expected to play a significant role in bolometer development and fabrication that will increase in responsibility with time.
The bolometer arrays are fabricated on silicon wafers with 5-10 levels, most of which are superconducting metals. Silicon Nitride membranes are used to suspend the bolometers. The superconducting RF circuitry on the arrays includes antennas, band-defining filters, and leg suspended bolometers. The bolometers are readout using SQUID amplifiers using a frequency-domain multiplex strategy.
- Assisting in the fabrication of the bolometer arrays in the Marvell Nanofabrication facility.
- Testing of bolometer arrays to ensure performance to specification, including dark properties and optical properties.
- Participate in project meetings with staff and graduate student researchers.
- Contribute to writing research reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Present research findings at meetings and conferences.
A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Physics or a related field is required by the start date. At the time of application, the basic minimum requirement is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation.
Additional Qualifications Required by Start
? Demonstrated proficiencies with micro-lithographic fabrication tools and knowledge of how processes can be modified to achieve the goals of the design.
? Ability to use cryogenic techniques for testing of bolometer arrays.
? Communication skills for presentation of results to astronomy, physics, and engineering professionals.
? Familiarity with RF sputter metal deposition, low-stress silicon nitride membranes, optical lithography, mask design and fabrication, plasma etching, step coverage optimization, and wafer dicing.
? Experience with technical writing and writing peer-reviewed journal publications.
This is a full-time (100%) position for two years with a starting salary range of $53,900-$63,300 depending on qualifications, plus benefits, with the possibility of renewal based on performance.

3. HPC Software Engineer
The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a mid-level software engineering position for its collaborative research as a Joint Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder).
Background: The Global Systems Division (GSD) of NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) is designing, developing and testing new weather models to improve weather prediction. The goal is to improve prediction of severe weather including hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, flooding, and other weather that can have enormous impact on transportation, commerce, energy, and other sectors of the U.S. economy. Increasingly accurate forecasts depend on large high performance supercomputers to run advanced weather prediction models.
The High Performance Computing Section (HPCS) in GSD supports the development of these research models and conducts research into new and emerging computer chip technologies such as Graphical Processing Unit (GPUs) and Many-Integrate Core devices. The HPCS supports model development thru parallelization and porting of codes to diverse super-computer systems in Colorado, Wyoming, Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Texas and other locations where cutting edge research systems are available from Intel, NVIDIA, Cray, and IBM. It also conducts advanced research on emerging chips, compilers, and tools.
The HPCS seeks a candidate to support the development, parallelization of porting of next-generation models and data assimilation systems to diverse traditional CPU, and emerging fine-grain computing systems. The successful candidate should have strong credentials in software engineering, and experience parallelizing applications using OpenMP and MPI, and an ability to run on large HPC Systems. Experience parallelizing application using OpenMP and OpenACC for the MIC and GPUs is also desirable.
The individual in this position will be a mid to senior-level software developer or scientist who will support the development of advanced weather prediction models. The incumbent will work with the software and science teams, and group leader who will set long term goals and priorities. Duties will include developing scripts and test procedures, using software repositories, parallelizing codes for high-performance, porting, running models on traditional and fine-grain HPC systems. Application areas may also include research in machine learning, data assimilation, and emerging architectures and compilers.
- Support the software infrastructure including source code, configuration files and scripts.
- Develop, maintain, and test weather prediction models
- Parallelization and optimization of applications targeting large HPC systems
Exploratory Research and Development
- Porting and optimizing code on GPU or MIC Processors

Required qualifications include:

- At least 2 years of experience with MPI and/or OpenMP programming
- 3 or more years of experience with the Linux or Unix operating systems
- Proficiency in shell scripting including C-shell, K-shell, ruby and/or perl
Highly desired qualifications include:
- Strong software design skills with demonstrated ability in code development and testing.
- Parallel programming experience for GPU, MIC using OpenMP, OpenACC, MPI

4. Professor in Applied Geophysics
We have an exciting opportunity for a Professor in Applied Geophysics at our new Lyell Centre Collaboration.
The Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Science and Technology is a strategic collaboration between Heriot-Watt University and the British Geological Survey (BGS). The overarching strategic objective of this new partnership is to find pragmatic, evidence-based solutions to critical global challenges associated with the Earth’s surface, sub-surface, oceans and atmosphere.
Our new purpose built facility was completed in February 2016. The main Lyell Centre building comprises two wings and accommodates BGS and Heriot-Watt University staff, with laboratory, aquarium, office and collaboration space.
Applied geophysics is an integral part of the Lyell Centre where the Institute of Petroleum Engineering and the BGS have pioneered many geophysical techniques, workflows, and applications, from petroleum exploration and time-lapse monitoring of producing reservoirs to developing new rock physics models that enable us to better characterise fractures and faults in the subsurface. This research benefits from our complementary expertise in petrophysics, reservoir characterisation and reservoir modelling while the results feed directly into other disciplines relevant to the hydrocarbon industry such as history matching and model calibration.
The broader expertise at the Lyell Centre in disciplines such as groundwater hydrology, CO2 storage, hydrothermal systems and geothermal energy also allows us to expand our applied geophysics research to environmental applications. The research environment at the Lyell Centre hence provides the equipment, time and expertise to further innovate all areas of applied geophysics related to near-surface and subsurface geological processes.

7. 12 PhD positions on the Ecology of Molecules
The new PhD Research Training Group “The Ecology of Molecules” is being coordinated at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the University of Oldenburg (Germany). The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, performing fundamental and applied research in the marine sciences. The institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through the close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematic modelling) of its research groups. The research focuses on marine biogeochemical cycles and on the functional role of marine biodiversity. Besides the ICBM, the Institute for Chemistry, the Institute for Biology und Environmental Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering at the Jade University of Applied Sciences are involved in EcoMol.
15 doctoral students will work in EcoMol in a multidisciplinary environment. With EcoMol we introduce and advance a new conceptual framework that extends ecological principles to the non-living molecular environment. The ecology of molecules understands organic matter as populations of compounds that interact with communities of organisms in a mutual way. This novel scientific framework merges the classical disciplines of ecology and geochemistry.
Each scholarship (1500? per month) has a duration of three years and will start up to six months after 1st of October 2016.
Successful applicants should have an excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology Physics, Environmental Sciences, Mathematical Modelling, Marine Technology or closely related disciplines. 8. Assistant Research Physicist
Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks
applicants for up to two Assistant Research Physicist positions, specifically
in the area of the development and use of hybrid kinetic plasma models, with an
emphasis on describing the interaction of planets and small bodies with space
plasmas. This activity would be conducted as part of the Dynamic Response of
the Environment at Asteroids, the Moon, and the Moons of Mars (DREAM2) team
under the Solar System Exploration and Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI). The
goal of DREAM2 is to understand how small airless bodies interact with the
space environment, with an emphasis on the Moon, Asteroids, and the moons of
Mars, Phobos and Deimos. Research in these areas is also supported by several
other related research programs at SSL in the form of grants and participation
in the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission.
There have been an unprecedented number of space missions sent to the Moon in the past decade, including the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), the Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of the Moon’s Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS), Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), and Kaguya. These new data sets combined with sustained research and analysis activities under DREAM2 continue to drive a renaissance in our understanding of how small bodies interact with their space environments. These include space plasma interactions such as wakes, surface interactions including particle reflections, sputtering into neutrals and ions, and the creation of electric fields and dust. Additional interactions of interest include magnetic induction in planetary and small body interiors produced by activity in the solar wind and other plasmas.
The Assistant Research Physicist will engage in independent and collaborative research with both SSL and outside personnel, attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships, vigorously pursue publication of research in peer reviewed journals and pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.
The anticipated start date is August 1, 2016. The initial appointment will be full-time for two years, with a possibility of renewal. Extension of the appointment is subject to performance and availability of funds.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. Benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage are included in the compensation package.
Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.

At least two years of postdoctoral experience in modeling processes in space plasma physics.
Experience in the development and use of hybrid kinetic plasma models that apply one or more of the research areas outlined above is desirable.
The ability to work in an interdisciplinary fashion is desired, as a member of a team including theorists, experimentalists, and students, is also highly desirable, as is the use past and current space mission data as model validation tools.
Familiarity with the physics of the small body interactions with the solar wind is desirable. Demonstrated analytical and programming skills also highly desirable.
