1. Postdoctoral or post-Master's - Wisconsin Water Resources Science-Policy Fellowship (hydrogeology)

The University of Wisconsin Water Resources Institute (WRI), in partnership with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey (WGNHS) and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR), seek postdoctoral and post-master’s candidates interested in tackling science and policy challenges related to groundwater management in Wisconsin. Together, these programs will fund the Wisconsin Water Resources Science-Policy Fellow position. This Fellow position will provide a unique educational and career opportunity for a recent graduate who is interested both in aquatic resources and in the policy decisions affecting those resources in Wisconsin.

This year, the fellowship will focus on the challenges associated with reducing nitrate levels in groundwater by making the most efficient use of nitrogen in agricultural production. We seek applicants who can:

· Apply their academic background, including course work or research experience, in groundwater flow and contaminant transport processes, application of numerical models, and evaluating uncertainty in results

· Work independently and in teams to develop, calibrate and apply three dimensional groundwater flow models using standard groundwater modeling packages

· Conduct field work, such as reconnaissance surveys, data collection, and installation and maintenance of  groundwater sampling equipment at WGNHS research sites

· Compile and analyze hydrogeologic data, maintain project databases, document model development and application

· Prepare and edit project reports and manuscripts for publication

· Prepare and present project findings in person to a variety of audiences, including regulators, scientists, and interested stakeholders

· Work cooperatively with WGNHS partners such as USGS, WDNR, and individuals from Wisconsin’s agricultural community.

3. Graduate Assistantship (M.S. and Ph.D.) opportunities

Graduate Assistantship (M.S. and Ph.D.) opportunities available for Fall 2018 in the Department of Geosciences, Western Michigan University.

Teaching Assistantships are available for the Fall semester (August 2018) in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs.  Financial support includes stipend and tuition for two academic years (M.S.) or four academic years (PhD) from the date of enrollment in the program.  The Department of Geosciences consists of 12 faculty members who maintain active research programs in glacial geology, hydrogeology, near-surface geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing/GIS, paleoclimate studies and basin analysis. In recent years, the department has extended its scope to new frontiers of earth science, including airborne and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) geophysics and remote sensing, mass transport in fractured media, and carbonate petrology.

The affiliated Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education (MGRRE) maintains an extensive collection of drill cores that provide excellent opportunities for creative subsurface studies.  Dedicated research laboratories are also maintained for mass spectrometry, contaminant hydrology, aqueous geochemistry, remote sensing/GIS/informatics, geotechnical studies, near-surface geophysics, and basin analysis.  Our graduates have an excellent record of employment in academia and industry.

6. Graduate Assistantship in Remote Sensing, GIS, and Environmental Sciences at Ohio State University

Applications are invited for MS/PhD graduate assistantships in environmental remote sensing, GIS, and ecosystem modeling (priority given to applicants for PhD), beginning Fall 2018, with Dr. Kaiguang Zhao in the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), the Ohio State University. Dr. Zhao’s lab focuses on mapping, monitoring, modeling, and managing terrestrial environments across spatial scales via a combination of observation and modeling toolsets. Self-motivated individuals are sought, especially those with quantitative and computational skills who would like to address interdisciplinary environmental issues related to natural or human-dominated landscapes.

Successful applicants will have the flexibility to develop their own research topics in the general areas of remote sensing and environmental sciences, but the preference will be given to those interested in examining impacts of climate change and human activities in agriculture-dominated landscapes. The students are particularly encouraged to pursue research ideas through our newly funded projects. One project, funded by the Ohio Water Resources Center, is on the water-energy nexus issue in Ohio, seeking to answer how shale gas development affects landscape integrity and hydrological regime. A second project, funded by EPA, is to build a multi-scale hierarchical predictive tool for linking climate and land-use with river physicochemical gradients and ecological condition to predict and prevent harmful algal blooms in the upper Ohio River basin. Another project, funded by USDA, is to identify adaptive strategies and policies that can mitigate the risks posed by climate extremes in the Eastern Corn Belt Region and help to achieve sustainable and resilient agroecosystem management, through an integrated modeling approach aiming to balance agricultural production with protection of critical ecosystem services. Through projects like these, there exist numerous opportunities to collaborate with physical scientists, ecologists, sociologists, and economists.
