5. PhD Position in Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry at Dalhousie University

The Department of Earth Sciences at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada is seeking creative, self-motivated candidates for a fully funded Ph.D. position, focusing on compound specific isotope analysis of amino acids in organic paleoceanographic archives. This position leverages significant investments in ocean science at Dalhousie through the recently established Ocean Frontier Institute, internationally recognized expertise in biogeochemistry, brand new state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to compound specific isotope analysis of amino acids, as well as ship time on the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen in summer 2018.

Working under the supervision of Dr. Owen Sherwood and in collaboration with members of the Oceanography and Biology departments, the student will develop and apply novel biogeochemical proxies for nutrient-plankton dynamics in the Arctic and subarctic oceans.

6. MS Assistantship in Ecophysiology

An MS research assistantship is available in the Ecophysiology lab of Dr. Heidi Renninger in the Department of Forestry (http://www.cfr.msstate.edu/forestry/) at Mississippi State University starting in the Fall, 2018.  Broadly, our lab seeks to understand how the physical environment affects plant physiological functioning in terms of productivity and water use and how environmental change will alter plant and ecosystem function in the future.  We are currently working with short rotation woody biofuel crops to determine environmental vs. genetic controls on productivity, water use and nutrient uptake.  The assistantship includes a stipend, full tuition waiver and health insurance.  More information about the graduate school at Mississippi State University can be found here:  http://www.grad.msstate.edu/.

7. PhD and MS Research Assistantships in Urban Stormwater

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Marquette University invites PhD and Masters applicants to join Dr. Walter McDonald and Dr. Anthony Parolari on a number of recently funded projects related to real-time control of stormwater systems and monitoring of green stormwater infrastructure. Project descriptions are provided below.

1. Evaluating and proposing engineering, policy, and legal options to guide real-time control (RTC) of stormwater infrastructure. The project is funded through the NSF Water Equipment and Policy Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) located in Milwaukee, WI and presents a unique opportunity to collaborate with academic, water industry, and utility partners. The graduate research assistant will work alongside a Marquette law student to evaluate options for integrating real-time control of stormwater infrastructure into existing engineering regulatory criteria and legal structures.

2. Low-cost real-time controls to improve volume and peak flow mitigation of green infrastructure. The main goal of this project is to develop a low-cost real-time control system that can augment green infrastructure practices to improve volume and peak flow mitigation. The graduate research assistant will work on real-time control development (hardware, software, power, etc.) and field implementation of controls within green infrastructure practices.

3. Evaluating green infrastructure performance through continuous monitoring. The goal of this project is to monitor multiple green stormwater infrastructure practices in order to quantify their long-term performance, identify limiting variables in meeting volume reduction goals, and develop improved metrics for volume retention and peak flow rates of green infrastructure. The graduate research assistant will develop the monitoring plan, maintain monitoring equipment, and collect and analyze data. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in environmental monitoring, stormwater modeling, and/or green stormwater infrastructure.

We are seeking highly motivated individuals with the ability to work across disciplinary and institutional boundaries. In addition to the desired project-specific qualifications, the successful candidates will have a Bachelors or Masters degree in civil and environmental engineering or other related field, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
