1. Tenure track professor in ecosystem genomics

Some of the most challenging issues in understanding the components and processes of natural and managed ecosystems have a common foundation in gene-environment interactions. We are in the process of assembling a cluster of outstanding new faculty members to contribute to the development of a new program that integrates ecosystem science and genomics – “ecosystem genomics” -- at the University of Arizona. To complement and extend five hires to date in the cluster, we are searching for two new colleagues at the assistant or associate level (although strong candidates will be considered at any rank) who share an interest in developing active teaching and research programs in the theoretical and empirical genomics of ecosystems.

The appointee will be expected to support and promote Inclusive Excellence, the UA diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiative designed to create an inclusive environment for all students, staff, and faculty. The appointee will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The appointee also will participate in outreach and contribute to departmental/college/university service. Finally the appointee will interact with the dynamic and exciting cluster and related initiatives at the interfaces of genomics and ecosystems. In these and other ways, the appointee will develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding the university’s collaborations with community and business partners.

2. Harvard University Environmental Fellows Program

The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Environmental Fellows will work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department while also strengthening connections across the University's academic disciplines.

Program Requirements:

? Candidates for 2018 Environmental Fellowships should have received their terminal degree between May 2014 and August 2018. (Fellows must have filed their dissertation before starting their appointment in September 2018.)

? Candidates with a doctorate or equivalent in any field are eligible, and they may propose research projects in any discipline. Applicants without a Ph.D. may apply if they have studied in fields where the Ph.D. is not the typical terminal degree. All successful candidates will be able to demonstrate experience performing scholarly research.

? Each candidate must secure a commitment from one or more Harvard faculty members to serve as a mentor and to provide office or lab space for the two-year fellowship.

? Candidates may have received their degrees at any university in the world. Foreign nationals are eligible for fellowships, though study at Harvard requires proficiency in English.

? Candidates who received terminal degrees from Harvard, and post-docs currently working at Harvard are eligible for the fellowship provided their research and host arrangements take them in new directions and forge new connections within the University. Harvard candidates should not propose to continue to work with the same professors or lab groups with whom they are currently associated. No candidate should propose to work extensively with his or her thesis advisor.

? Harvard is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.

? Successful candidates should be prepared to commit to work at Harvard for the full two years of the fellowship. This fellowship requires residency in the Cambridge area and any fieldwork trip must be scheduled for the summer or January recess.

7. Postdoctoral Research Associate in Sea-Ice Predictability

The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, seeks a postdoctoral or more senior research associate to investigate the predictability of Arctic sea ice on seasonal to inter-annual timescales using a dynamical prediction system.

This work will specifically focus on the impact of ocean, atmosphere, and sea ice initial conditions on the seasonal prediction skill of Arctic sea ice. The successful candidate will perform and analyze a suite of idealized and operational prediction model experiments using GFDL coupled global climate models. Key research questions targeted in this work include: (1) Initialization of sea-ice thickness using satellite and in situ observations, and its impact on summer sea-ice predictions; (2) The role of subsurface ocean initialization in predictions of winter sea ice; and (3) The development of data assimilation techniques for sea-ice concentration and sea-ice thickness.

Candidates with expertise in data assimilation, sea-ice modeling, or ensemble prediction are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric and oceanic sciences, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field. Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance.
